Dysfunctionality

Welcome back!

Or if this is your first time here, hello and feel free to take a look at the stuff on this blog!
(I mean, that's why you're here right? )

So, first off, you might be wondering why I'm throwing big words at you. It's because I don't like you. Okay, no. I'm here to share with you an important topic about families and their love ! which I copied off the internet.

So, read on and enjoy!

What is a functional family?
A Functional family is a family with everyone in the family doing what they are supposed to do e.g the father earning money. A further simplification would be a normal or average family.
Huh? I don't get it. Examples?
Well, in the case of The Village By The Sea by Anita Desai, the functional family refers to Biju and the rich de Silvas.
Ok, so what is a dysfunctional family?

A Dysfunctional family is a broken family.
Oh, as in divorced?
Not always. Actually, it is when the family or maybe one or more members of that family are/is not doing what they are supposed to be doing!
I see. Can I have an example?
In the case of The Village By The Sea by Anita Desai, the dysfunctional family refers to Hari’s family.

A quick summary of what we have learned:
Functional Family:
a)Biju
b)de Silvas

Dysfunctional family:
c)Hari’s family.

Now, I realize that many of you may not understand what I'm talking about. You can find the summary of Village by the Sea online, but for your benefit I will be extracting evidence so you don't have to look through the whole book.

The text in bold is talking about Biju's family and the De Silva's. ( Functional)

The normal text refers to Hari's family.( Dysfunctional )

Biju’s wife wears luxurious and expensive gold bangles.

Kamal and Bela can barely afford cheap glass bangles.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Biju has a fleet of boats he uses to catch fish and even a motor boat. (Look, I know you are wondering whats the big deal about motors but this is rural India in 1982.)

Hari’s father had a boat which had been sold to clear his debts for toddy. Hari had to fish with a small and broken fishing net which could only provide him some small and miserable fishes and shrimps.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The De Silva's can eat plates and plates of bread or fresh big pom frets every morning for breakfast.

Hari’s family could only afford to eat chapati every meal. They could not even spare some money to buy some sweets.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When the De Silva's feel like it, they simply whisk away to Thul for a holiday.

Hari's family have never travelled to another country, not even a city.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a real problem in many developing countries even now.

So please, appreciate what you have and the warmth of your family!

Have a nice day,
Sean
